So about a year ago I did this using a splatter/salt effect with watercolors (really awesome and fun, highly recommended!). Then, sometime in the past couple months I came across who does these amazing pieces with eyes and just portraits in general - go check her out, good stuff!
So taking that inspiration with my current techniques, I did this piece as a Christmas gift for a good friend of mine who has always loved eyes (she drew them all the time in class). It's a little different for me but I really enjoyed doing it! I had fun blowing around the paint and adding the salt like I was casting a spell (I've been watching Merlin) xD

The splatter is made by loading the brush with water and paint and applying it in a 'puddle' on the paper at the center of the splatter. Then it's just blown around. The rest is just with paintbrush =]
That is a very lucky friend to get something so beautiful! It's wonderful to see pieces that you know were fun for the artist just because their composition is so solid. There's an implication of a face by the direction of the water drips, but then it turns back to a drawing when they do not curve. I love that kind of duality where it looks believable but there is an element to pull the viewer back and remember that it is a representation, but a darn good one~♪
